Creating Access to high quality stories, and joy for all!

At Raising a Reader, we believe every family deserves joyful, inclusive, and high-quality reading experiences at home. Our partners play a critical role in making that vision real, and Barefoot Books is a shining example. Known for elevating diverse voices and global stories, Barefoot Books creates beautifully designed children’s books that spark curiosity, build connection, and celebrate the richness of our world.

I recently had the joy of having lunch with Barefoot Books founder and CEO, Nancy Traversy, and every time I connect with her, I leave inspired. Nancy brings a rare combination of genuine enthusiasm, urgency, and deep commitment to serving all children, families, and educators. Her passion is contagious and grounded in action.

Nancy and the Barefoot Books team are deeply responsive to the evolving needs of families and classrooms. They collaborate with creative, authentic authors and illustrators and are intentional about centering representation and lived experience in the stories they publish. Their approach ensures that children see themselves, their families, and their communities reflected with care and respect.

During our conversation, Nancy shared their new catalogue and many titles. One that stood out to me was The Clean-Up Monster, a delightful board book created by a neurodivergent author and illustrator and rooted in their own lived experience. Designed for children ages 2–4, it’s a joyful celebration of creative problem-solving and teamwork; an example of how thoughtful storytelling can empower young readers and spark connection at home and in early learning settings.

We’re grateful for Barefoot Books’ openness, partnership, and shared commitment to inclusive, joyful reading experiences. Collaborations like this remind us what’s possible when organizations align around children and families. Together, we’re helping create a world where every child has access to stories that reflect who they are and who they can become.
